Make vs Zapier: A Mental Model

If Zapier is a conveyor belt — items move in a straight line from step to step — then Make.com is a flowchart. Items arrive, get processed, and then split into different paths based on conditions. Both are useful, but they excel at different things.

Zapier's linear model is perfect when every input should follow the same path. New email arrives, AI classifies it, ticket gets created, always. But what happens when you need the automation to do different things based on what the AI decides? What if urgent emails should page the on-call team, routine emails should create a ticket, and spam should be archived and reported? In Zapier, you would need multiple Zaps or awkward filter steps. In Make, you draw three paths from the AI step and assign conditions. It is visual, intuitive, and easy to modify.

Make also handles loops natively. If the AI returns a list of 5 action items from a meeting transcript, Make's iterator module processes each one individually, creating 5 separate tasks. Zapier added line-item support, but it is less intuitive than Make's visual approach.
