The Summarization Trap

AI is extraordinarily good at summarization. Give it a fifty-page report, and in seconds you get a crisp, well-organized summary hitting all the key points. This capability is so impressive that it creates a dangerous illusion: the summary feels authoritative, and the feeling of understanding replaces the work of understanding.

Here is the core problem: summarization and truth are different things. Summarization is the ability to compress information. Truth is the accuracy of that information. An AI can produce a flawless summary of a document that contains false claims. It can generate a perfectly structured analysis that blends real facts with fabricated ones. And it will deliver both with the same confidence and polish.

This is not a flaw in AI that will be fixed in the next update. It is a fundamental characteristic of how these systems work. Large language models are trained to produce text that is statistically plausible given their training data and the current conversation. Statistically plausible is not the same as true.
