AI Is Confidently Wrong More Often Than You Think

Here is something that surprises most new AI users: when AI makes a mistake, it does not hesitate, hedge, or look uncertain. It states incorrect information with the same calm confidence it uses for correct information. A fabricated statistic looks identical to a real one. A nonexistent research paper is cited with the same formatting as a real citation. An incorrect legal interpretation reads as authoritatively as an accurate one.

This is not a bug that will be fixed in the next update. It is a fundamental characteristic of how large language models work. They predict the most likely next word based on patterns, and sometimes the most likely-sounding text is factually wrong. Understanding this — truly internalizing it — is the difference between using AI safely and using it dangerously.
